Glook – Summer Class

Summer class made Glook. It’s a completely simple and amazing project. Mix cornstarch and water (about 2:1) and watch what happens if you put pressure on it. See what happens when you let it run through your fingers.

Glook is a non-Newtonian fluid so it doesn’t behave like water or juice or soda. Enjoy!

What is he wearing?

As I was browsing through HomePlus one morning a few weeks ago, I came across a stash of Crayola products. My heart lept for joy when I saw they had a 64 pack of crayons. I bought them for myself, despite the staggering price tag (almost 8 USD). I’m having a lot of fun and the kids are fascinated by these “meegook” (American) crayons. Another product included markers made for writing on glass. I have ton of windows in my classroom and my mind started whirling with the fun we could have with these. There are certain standard activities I do on paper, but dude, now I can do them on glass. The kids in Phoenix class went nuts when they found out they got to color on the windows.

One of my standard activities for teaching question/response to “What is he/she/they wearing?” is having students draw what I tell them (he/she/they) and then once their finished they have to come up and orally say what the people in the pictures are wearing. Same activity this day, only we did it on the windows.

Cherry Blossoms

Last week, on a rainy morning, I couldn’t sleep. I took a trip to Doonsun-Dong (Daejeon’s new downtown area). The cherry blossoms were just starting to come out. Enjoy a taste of spring.

Classroom Karaoke

As an ESL teacher, it’s important for kids to repeat the language their learning over and over. Believe me, it gets boring. When I found these pens that look like microphones I immediately knew I had to do Karaoke. This is Stella and Jasmine. They’re singing a song called “Mom, Mom” from their Tops 2 book. The unit essentially covers countable and noncountable nouns. They had such fun and wanted to sing the song over and over again.

These two are two of my favorite students. Bright, polite and engaged. There are days I wish all my students were like them.

Sour Puss?

This is Jimmy, from Summer Class. For science, we studied the sense of taste. I brought in a lemon (sour), strong coffee (bitter), candy (sweet) and potato chips (salty). We tasted them one at a time and learned the English word for the taste. As you can tell, Jimmy just took a big bite of the lemon.

Once we finished with the tasting, we completed a worksh eet (pdf). As a note of explanation, the lines under the foods are to write the name of the food. The lines in the large boxes are to write the type of taste. You then cut out the lower boxes and paste them in the big ones. I also let them color the pictures.

Andy and his family are moving to a new city. He was one of the top students in the Kindergarten and will be sorely missed by all the students and staff.

Alyssa and Spiders

This is a picture from cooking class. I don’t do cooking with the kindergarteners, but I’ll will be doing it with a couple elementary school classes. This is Alyssa, one of our advanced 7 year olds. Listening to kids from her class, it really drives home the point between language learning and language acquisition. Often I’ll ask her where she learned a certain word and she’ll say she doesn’t remember. Little kids are like sponges. I wish I could pick up Korean the same way they’re picking up English.

This is Ella from Winter Class with one of their latest science projects. They made clay animals and then made a habitat for the animals to live in. Why the blue cellophane, you ask. Well, there’s a peep hole on the end of the box and this way, you get to see the blue sky. Actually, it looks more like it’s under water. The blue is really blue.

Relaxing

This is Brian just relaxing on our recent visit to the Hanbart Arboredum here in Daejeon. It’s definitely an awesome place to visit. It was beautiful and relaxing. I’m looking forward to visiting in the spring to see the differences.
